Pouring Forth Oil - IV

They have the wagon and the weapons so it's time to move on the train full of wealthy people. The plan is simple and the take should be big. They'll stop it in the middle of nowhere to avoid the law.

Rewards: Loot, Upgraded Dead Eye

Sulky, Angry, & Scarface

Arthur finds Sean attempting to shoot some bottles at the destroyed house. They banter a bit and Arthur ends it by quick-drawing on a bottle. Sean begs to come with them on the train robbery. He antagonizes Arthur some more. Depending what time you start this mission, they may need to get some sleep before the train is due at night. Arthur will doze off next to the wagon with Sean nearby.

John and Charles arrive. John told Sean he wasn't coming but Sean disagrees since Arthur said he could - even though he didn't. The train is supposed to be coming tonight so they need to head out. All four jump on the wagon with Arthur at the reins. Drive to the railroad crossing. Each of the men's horses will follow. John says they shouldn't have too many guns to deal with on the train. Sean pokes fun at him and continues to annoy the group. They eventually shut him up but he asks about the train robbery at hand.

The plan now is to block the tracks with the oil wagon. Charles will deal with the engineer and John will rob the passengers. Sean will go to the baggage car. Arthur will keep an eye out and help where needed. John says the law shouldn't be quick to respond way out here. When you get to the crossing park the wagon on the tracks. All four dismount the wagon and the horses pulling it are released. Arthur tells the others to hide while he stops the train. He climbs on top of the wagon as the train approaches and covers his face.

Tickets, please

The train comes to a halt with barely any room to spare. The engineer inquires to the barricade but Charles takes him down. Get off the wagon and board the passenger car behind the locomotive. Upon entering John will come from the opposite end. Arthur knocks out a passenger as John begins taking items from the rest. Beat anyone that puts up a fight. You can rob them for extra loot if you want.

In the next coach Sean is there but Arthur tells him to go to the baggage car. Continue helping John gather loot. At the third coach John tells Arthur he's got it and to go to Sean. Walking out to a flatcar, Sean hasn't even got to it yet. As he opens the door a guard rushes him. Arthur enters Dead Eye and you are told you can now manually paint targets.

Shoot the guard before he shoots Sean. Another appears on top of the baggage car so take him down. Two more come out from cover at the far end. Kill them too. Sean will help when he recovers. When the coast is clear rob the baggage by looting the cabinets and chest. A bottle of fine brandy is also on a shelf. Clean house quickly or go out to Sean when you're done.

Counting cops

Sean sees two lawmen on horses riding up with lanterns. Two vs four? They can fight them off. As Arthur gives them a chance to run two more mounted lawmen arrive. Whoops. No turning back now. Take down the lawmen. Three more will come through the trees. When most of them are dead five more lawmen come from the opposite side. Clear them out.

When they are all dead it's time to go. Mount your horse and escape the law. Seven of them appear behind you no matter what direction you initially take. If you manage to take them down another wave of nine comes next.

Out of harm's way the gang stops and Arthur divides the loot. The money is good but they'll need a bigger score to get out of this place. John will work something in Valentine. The group gets suspicious as to how the law showed up so fast. They are locals not federal agents. A reminder to everyone not to get followed. They all split up.

Gold Tips

  • If Arthur does not have strong Dead Eye you will struggle to get gold for this mission. Try to level up beforehand or have items to restore it with you (but not health, for the medal requirement). Robbing the passengers may net you chewing tobacco.
  • You may want to make sure you have room for more loot items before starting this mission. For example, use or discard extra cigars. Otherwise you will not be able to loot everything.
  • There is no overall time objective so take it easy getting to the tracks. During the ride Charles and John can get knocked off so be careful near trees or signs.
  • There is no headshot or accuracy requirement.
  • For Dead Eye you only need kills. When Sean gets surprised he can block the guard's head and waste your Dead Eye. Try to get the torso or shift as far as you can to the right while walking to Sean. As soon as you have something in sight take the shot.
  • Use quick Dead Eye bursts to take down the guards and lawmen. Aim, activate, shoot. Again, you only need kills. The rifle and small distance should help.
  • Keep your sights up and you should be able to kill all four guards before Sean gets up.
  • In the baggage car, only loot the baggage (and take the brandy if you want). Move quickly. If you mess around the law will cut you off before getting to all the baggage.
  • If you want a few kills to yourself, you can leave the train during the first wave of lawmen and go north where part of the second wave spawns. Three lawmen will be sitting behind the hill on the road waiting for the game to tell them to move. Be warned if you leave too many of the first wave they can kill your gang.
  • There is plenty of cover while on the train to avoid most of the bullets.
  • Fastest way to escape the law is going west along the tracks.
