Wild mustangs are spotted roaming the plains. They're worth a good amount so might as well capture a few.

Horse watching

John finds Uncle on the hill above the cattle pen. He's using a telescope to watch wild mustangs out on the plains. He's was wondering if it was worth telling John who is quite annoyed that Uncle didn't given the financial problems of getting their ranch started up again. As Uncle complains, John again reminds him that he could be dead instead.

Marston, you got yourself a horse

Mount up and follow Uncle into the plains. John continues to berate Uncle along the ride. Eventually they catch up to the herd of which the individual horses are marked on you radar/mini-map. You are told to lasso and break one of them (your choice). Hopefully you remember how to do so but if not let's review.

Lasso a wild horse while riding your horse. Continue holding the lasso (aim) as you dismount your horse and mount the wild one. When the wild horse begins bucking, keep John steady and center using the left analog stick. Use light taps left or right as needed. You'll need to keep him there for 30-60 seconds depending on how well you do.

The horse is tamed when it rears up and the camera returns to normal. Dismount the wild horse and remount yours. Uncle will lasso the former wild one and you are told to go for another. Catch up to the herd and repeat. You'll need to break three wild horses. They'll keep going around in a triangle as you chase them from place to place.

When you tame three, return to Beecher's Hope with Uncle. John and Uncle will continue to exchange words along the way. Enter the marker in the pen to trigger the final cutscene. John tells Uncle to make sure there's enough hay as the old man acknowledges and walks away.

Gold Tips

  • Run to your horse and mount up.
  • Follow Uncle until you reach the top of the first big hill looking out at a tree. From that hill sprint ahead past the tree to the herd.
  • Make sure your lasso is out before reaching the horses and quickly lasso the first one you can.
  • Quickly break the horse using the tips above. If you lose the lasso during the horse transition it can be a pain getting the wild horse back so be careful.
  • As soon as the horse rears up, quickly dismount the wild one and remount your horse.
  • Sprint to the herd again and repeat for a total of three wild horses. If you are quick the herd may ride past you on the way to the next area (you scare them the opposite way initially so they come back past to get to the next area).
  • After the third one is tame, quickly remount your horse and sprint back to the pen at Beecher's Hope. Remember that there is a cliff at the south side so go around either end.
