The Joys of Civilization

Arthur attempts to get information about Angelo Bronte but the locals have him running in circles.

New in town

Needing to find information about Angelo Bronte, Arthur sets out to ask around. There are three locations on the map. The far east location is a small bar. The bartender will tell you to check the Bastille Saloon near the park and Quincy Harris statue. The middle location is at a small park with gallows. A man sitting on the steps will also tell you to try the Bastille Saloon. The west location is the Bastille Saloon itself.

Approaching the doors, a man with a gun sticks up Arthur. It turns out to be Dutch having a little fun. He didn't get far in the saloon. Maybe Arthur will have better luck. Dutch will meet him later. Upon entering the saloon, the patrons know Arthur doesn't quite belong. Move to the bar and they'll get back to their business. Call the bartender who is busy in a conversation. If he takes too long you can call him again. Order a whiskey. Arthur doesn't like the price but buys one for the bartender.

Getting to business, Arthur asks the bartender if he knows of Angelo Bronte. The bartender tells him to leave it. He isn't telling Arthur anything. Arthur gives up. As he walks away a patron from the bar grabs his attention. He knows of Angelo and has bad view of him. He says to check with the kids in the alley. Go outside to the alley. The patron says not to trust immigrants.

Street games

In the courtyard behind the buildings you can ask people about the kids. They'll point you to the next courtyard. Go past a tree and some kids ask for a cigarette. Arthur asks about Angelo. One of the kids will tell him where he is for $5. Arthur pays. Follow the kid. He gives Arthur a tour of the area. While distracting him in front of the church, the other kid - Cleet - cuts Arthur's satchel and runs.

Chase after the kid Cleet. He jumps from a wagon to a streetcar which takes him a few blocks away. He then runs into an alley. A guy points Arthur in. Search the area. You can ask people which way he went. The kid runs off across the street. Going through another alley he climbs stairs. The gate locks behind him so either pick or kick it. The kid then goes across a roof before climbing back down to the street. From there he runs into a market. Ask around again if you want. Ahead to the right the kid bolts while knocking over food items and Arthur slips on it. When he gets back up continue the chase.

Around a corner Cleet finally stops as other kids surround Arthur with weapons drawn. A bigger kid comes out. Arthur wants to know about Angelo. The bigger kid smacks Cleet. He says Angelo has a lot of friends but he's never seen Arthur before. The kid works at Angelo's house and knows he has 50 men. Eventually he tells Arthur the house is on Flavian St across from a park. Arthur gets his bag back and is told to leave.

It is possible to catch Cleet after he goes across the roof and drops to the street. Arthur will pin him down and get his bag back. Cleet will then tell him about Bronte's house on Flavian St across from the park. Cleet is released.

Done sightseeing

Back on the street, go to Dutch near the saloon. When you get close he'll call out. Go over and Arthur tells him that Angelo Bronte is a big name in town but no one wants to talk. He knows where the house is, though. Dutch will get John and they'll all meet there. Dutch walks off.

Later Arthur is writing in his journal. He dislikes both the swamps and the city. They are a long way from the open west.

Gold Tips

  • Quickly go to the bar in the saloon, call the bartender twice, and order the whiskey
  • When leaving the saloon, you can walk out while talking to the patron.
  • Quickly go to the kids in the courtyard.
  • Stay with the kid giving the tour.
  • Once Cleet has the bag, you won't be able to catch up. After he gets on the streetcar there is a horse to the right you can borrow to speed up the chase. Note that during replays Arthur has poor stamina so keep an eye on it.
  • When he gets off the streetcar, keep going to the next street. The kid will pop out across. Dismount at the alley and go after him.
  • Down the alley the kid goes right to the stairs. Instead, go left and climb over the small walls. Make your way out to the street and go over to the end of the building where the kid jumps down. Wait for him and then grab him. Note Arthur may lock on to anyone sitting there and talk to them instead of dealing with the kid so be careful. You cannot ride the horse over to this point.
  • Once you have the bag and Bronte's location, quickly get back to Dutch who is to the west. Cut through the courtyards and get to the street leading directly to him. Be careful of locked gates that are non-climbable.
