What's Next For Rockstar San Diego? Pirates?

So what do the minds behind Red Dead Redemption have in store for us next? Could we see another game in the Red Dead Series, a new Midnight Club, or are they moving on to a whole new frontier? Let's take a look at some things...

Midnight Club

The more established series from Rockstar San Diego, Midnight Club gave racing games a more open feel. The last game to come out was Midnight Club Los Angeles in 2008 and the previous game in 2006. With Red Dead Redemption taking 2010, it seems another Midnight Club is due very soon but Rockstar could choose to continue riding out L.A.'s success for a little longer.

Red Dead R________

2010's Red Dead Redemption and Undead Nightmare left us wanting more. Hopefully the series will continue but in what direction we can only dream. We could get a sequel following the death of the Old West or we could get a prequel showing a time before we met John Marston. Undoubtedly the new game will take place in a brand new setting, likely bigger and better than Red Dead Redemption.

Unfortunately, since we just got Red Dead Redemption, very small chance we'll see another for some time. Some may be saddened by that, but those who love gaming and the effort Rockstar puts into their games will know it's a lot better than seeing the same game with a new title year after year after year....

Rumors

So what are the rumors saying? An initial rumor was that the Rockstar San Diego team was working on something entirely new, both for them and the game industry as a whole. Hard to say exactly what kind of game that is, since so much has already been done. "Entirely" new would be very difficult but expanding on an idea or taking a current genre in a new direction seems more achievable and well within Rockstar's realm.

Another rumor we've heard from a source close to us is that the team may be working on a pirate game, possibly taken from team member's interests. Going with Red Dead Redemption, I assume we are talking the historical kind rather than modern day. As you may or may not know, the pirate life is more than two sail boats shooting at each other on the open water. Another aspect involves exploration of new areas both land and sea plus the fight against military forces trying to capture them.

A pirate game wouldn't be too much different from Red Dead while still being unique and new as stated above. Think RDR a couple hundred years earlier in more tropical locations. Little or no horses but plenty of other animals in the wild. There would also be many old guns and cannons to fire at other people or against enemy ships. Could be fun. Rockstar would definitely make it fun.

Take all of this as you will. Rockstar is notoriously tight lipped about what they are up to (a good thing if you ask me) and what little information leaks out is the result of fan investigation - if you have any actual evidence to share, please do!
