Let's do this

Up on the hilltop overlooking Fort Mercer, Marston is joined by the marshals, Nigel West Dickens, and Irish. Dickens tells John it's time to go since Seth is inside the fort but likely will not last very long in the company of killers. John says he just wants to stop Bill Williamson and the marshal agrees. Next John gets into the back of Nigel's wagon with the Gatling gun and the deputies close it up to conceal him.

After riding to the fort (you are in control of the camera movements during the trip) and taking in the fresh scent of miracles, Nigel backs the wagon into the rear gate and begins his sales pitch. Attracting a crowd to come close with his tales of strength, he gives a couple taps on the side of the wagon to give John his cue. Marston lifts the covers over him and mans the gun as surprised gang members flee.

Say hello to my little friend!

In control, use the Gatling gun to take out the enemies hiding behind various things all around you. There will be a few enemies coming down from the back-left stairs too. Kill them all and a second wave will come from the middle doorway (over the well) and alleyway (through the arch) while others come from the doorway of the building on your right. Kill them all and do this for three more waves of about 4 enemies each (5 waves total including initial). When there are two enemies left, the next wave will begin. There are some TNT crates around the area but not many.

After you annihilate all the enemies, a cutscene will show some more on the rear walkway fleeing back farther into the fort as the marshals enter the gate. Back in control, run after the cowards with the marshals. When you reach the stairs a cinematic will show Dickens escaping with his wagon. Continue moving forward and take out the two enemies ahead. Run up the next set of stairs and there will be two enemies on a lower level in front of you. Kill them and use the stairs to the right (or jump down).

Up ahead are two more in the corner near the main gate. Kill them. Four enemies will spawn in the building across the courtyard. One runs out to the left, one stays inside at the hole in the wall, and the other two run into the courtyard. You can take them out a couple ways:
  • My favorite way is to continue running the walkway. Run around to the building and take out the first (left) guy before running inside to kill the one hiding. Jump out of the hole and finish off the other two if the deputies haven't already.
  • Or, you can stay on the far side of the courtyard and kill them from there. You'll need to wait for the two higher ones to peak out and there's stairs to go down to the other two if needed.
When they are all dead, meet the marshal at the front gate. A cutscene shows the marshal saying they can't find Williamson anywhere and must be hiding. Meanwhile Dickens is pounding on the gate, screaming to open it. Once inside, Dickens reports that there are reinforcements on the way. Eli - spotting from above - says there are about a hundred of them. Marston gets onto Nigel's wagon which is out front and mans the Gatling gun again. Enemies are shown riding in on horseback.

Who's ready for more?

In control, take out the groups of enemies on the left and right. The ones on the left are running and the ones on the right get off their horses (which may get in your way). Kill them all. Just as they are dead, a group will spawn on the far right roadway. They will be escorting a wagon with a Gatling gun. Kill them all and if possible hit the TNT crate in the middle of the wagon to make it easier. Killing the horses pulling the wagon can also make it easier to aim at it.

Next a wave on horseback will come from the middle over the hill and ride towards the left. You should be able to get most of them before they get close and dismount. When they are dead, another wagon will spawn on the far left. Try to hit the TNT again. Finally, a wave of runners will come over the hill in the middle. They'll run to the left a little and then back towards the middle towards you. Kill them all. If you are good, you can either kill them as they crest the hill or shoot through the roof structure in front of you as they run by.

When they are all dead, the marshal will exclaim that you did it. The final cutscene shows Irish finally running into the action and Jonah with a survivor. He says Williamson went to Mexico the previous morning. John figures Bill is meeting up with Javier Escuella. After a little more interrogation they find out Bill is going somewhere near Chuparosa. Irish tells John that he'll take him there via ferry since he has friends in Mexico. Irish runs off to get his stuff. John bids farewell to the marshal and Dickens before heading out as the deputies finish beating the survivor. Marston stands outside in front of the gate, reflecting on the first time he stood there not too long ago.

Gold Tips

  • Ride the wagon to the fort. You can't do anything except move the camera around.
  • Mow down all the enemies with the Gatling gun. Don't hold the trigger, only use it when needed. Aim for the head. Also aim at the doorway and alleyway described above when a new wave begins.
  • Sprint to the rear stairs. During the cinematic, you'll automatically move along the walkway.
  • Dead-Eye and headshot the first two enemies. Then sprint up and around the walkway while killing the other enemies along the way. You shouldn't need cover at all.
  • Sprint around to the final building and take out the enemies as described in the first way above.
  • Use the Gatling gun to mow down the waves of enemies. Again, don't hold the trigger and aim for the head. Try to hit the TNT crates on the wagons.
