Honor Rankings
Details of the different Honor Ratings in Red Dead Redemption and how they affect gameplay.
There are 7 different honor ranks in Red Dead Redemption. As you play the game, you'll increase or decrease your Honor level based on the actions you take. If the level moves within certain boundaries, your rank will change.
Performing bad actions, like murdering innocent civilians or robberies will reduce your Honor.
Performing good actions, like helping civilians when you see a blue blip on the radar, or disarming opponents in duels will increase your honor.
Personally I feel the benefits for high honor outweigh those for low honor, but the choice is up to you.
Honor Rankings & Benefits
Hero (High 3)
PERK: Lawmen and Civilians will only report crimes if you commit more than one murder or bank robbery.
PERK: Randomly, you may encounter a nun who will approach you, usually while you're in a town. Upon talking to her, she will give you the Obscuridad del Santo Andres item which bestows luck on you, reducing enemy accuracy. You may continue to encounter nuns as you play through the game, sometimes they will give you money, others they will ask you to donate to them.
Peacemaker (High 2)
PERK: All shop items (outside of Thieves' Landing) will cost 50% less to purchase, and any items sold will earn 50% more money.
PENALTY: All shop items in Thieves' Landing will cost 50% more to purchase, and any items sold will earn 50% less money.
OUTFIT: The "Duster Coat" is unlocked as an outfit. It doesn't come with any benefits however.
Honest Joe (High 1)
PERK: Jobs which you can accept from towns will pay double the rewards. This includes Horsebreaking, Nightwatch and Bounty Hunting.
Drifter (Neutral)
This is the rank you'll start the game, rght in the middle of good and evil. It doesn't provide any perks or benefits.
Rustler (Low 1)
PERK: Bribing eyewitnesses will cost 50% less than normal after you're spotted committing a crime.
Road Agent (Low 2)
PERK: All shop items in Thieves' Landing will cost 50% less to purchase, and any items sold will earn 50% more money.
PENALTY: All shop items outside of Thieves' Landing will cost 50% more to purchase, and any items sold will earn 50% less money.
MISC: John Marston will insult people instead of greeting them when you press the Circle button.
Desperado (Low 3)
PERK: Civilians will only report crimes if you commit more than one murder or bank robbery.
PERK: If you don't have a mount, whistling will prompt a unique Dark Horse to arrive. Although it's only around mid-range in terms of speed compared to other horses, it can continue to run at top speed while off-road, where other horses will slow down slightly. It's stamina and heath are also higher than most other horses. It will stop responsing to whistles if your rank increases above "Drifter".

Freeze Your Rank With the Bandana
If you purchase the Bandana from the Tailor at Thieves' Landing, then equip it from the "Kit" section of your Satchel, your Honor level will be frozen. While wearing the Bandana, you won't gain or lose any honor points no matter you're actions. If you want to keep a high Honor ranking but occasionally want to perform bad actions, like cracking a safe or killing innocents to loot their bodies, equip the bandana to avoid losing any honor points. It won't stop you potentially getting a wanted level or a bounty placed on your head, but it will keep your Honor ranking safe.
