Official Synopsis

"America, early 1900's. The era of the cowboy is coming to an end.

Red Dead Redemption is an epic battle for survival in a beautiful open world as John Marston struggles to bury his blood-stained past, one man at a time."

Red Dead History

Many, many years went into creating Red Dead Redemption. This wasn't a smooth ride though...

First Outing

Red Dead Redemption was first presented behind closed doors to Sony individuals in 2005, a full 5 years before it would be released.

Public Performance

Red Dead Redemption's first display in public came on May 6th, 2009 when Rockstar Games released the first of what would be many trailers on their official website. Rockstar then went on to release a second video entitled "My Name Is John Marston" in December of 2009.

In the weeks and months that followed, Rockstar released a number of "Gameplay Series" videos which talk the viewer through various features within the game, from the characters and animals to the landscape plus more!

Delays

Following the initial release date of April 27th (North America) and April 30th, 2010 (International), Red Dead Redemption was delayed until May 18th and 21st on March 3rd.

Four days before Red Dead Redemption was to debut in North America, some Scandinavian retailers posted release dates for May 28th; a full week later than the set International date. Rockstar noted issues with a distributor but the game was later back on track for the 21st.

Hands On

Lucky gamers attending PAX East in March 2009 were the first public members to get an up close and personal glimpse of the game, including live demos. The previews out around the time of this event confirmed that Red Dead Redemption plays in a similar way to Grand Theft Auto IV and continues to use Rockstar's Advanced Game Engine (RAGE) which has been improved since it's Liberty City days. The game does however bring it's own individual look and feel to the huge free roam world it's set within.

Downloadable Content & Expansions

With the success of add-ons for the Grand Theft Auto series, Rockstar announced and talked about the DLC for Red Dead Redemption prior to the game's release. The first pack titled Outlaws to the End was made available for download in June 2010 for free with others following soon after.

The Undead Nightmare Collection released in November 2010 as a stand alone disc featuring the Legends and Killers (August), Liars and Cheats (September), & Undead Nightmare (October) packs which released prior. Undead Nightmare was similar to the GTA IV episodes which essentially created a new game in the same location. Later DLC released for the game included the Hunting and Trading Outfits (2010), the pre-order bonuses (2011), & Myths and Mavericks (2011).

Game of the Year

In October 2011, to honor the many awards acquired in 2010, a special Game of the Year Edition was released featuring the original game and all the DLC in one package. It also included Solomon's Folly gang hideout on the Xbox 360.
