No time to talk

John arrives at the Escalera mansion as army soldiers ride off with haste. Captain de Santa rides out and tells John to hurry and ride with them.

Hop on your horse and ride with de Santa to the convoy below. De Santa will tell you that rebels have taken over an abandoned fort on the other side of Nuevo Paraiso and his orders are to kill them all. At the convoy, dismount and take the shotgun position on the middle wagon. De Santa will get on and the convoy will head out. He'll say Captain Espinoza is already there with men and hopes he won't do anything stupid. It's a very long journey to the other side of the map so even if you're not going for the gold medal it is advised to trip skip.

If you trip skip, you'll be woken up by de Santa near Torquemada. He'll state to keep an eye out because something doesn't feel right. De Santa is, though...

The wagon in front of you will explode and de Santa yells about the ambush. On your right will be two enemies on top of the rocks and two down near the road. Kill them. As you get to the next road intersection, three enemies on horseback will ride in from the right. Kill them too.

After all the enemies are dead the remaining convoy continues to the army's camp. De Santa will comment on Captain Espinoza a little and say that he, de Santa, is in charge. There is a fierce battle ensuing as you approach. When the wagon stops, get off with de Santa and follow him into the camp. A cutscene shows Captain Espinoza coming from the fight yelling at de Santa, who talks back in an angry manner. De Santa tells John they should leave but Espinoza tells de Santa to shut his mouth and John to grab a sniper rifle because they have men's work to do.

All your base are belong to us

Grab the Rolling Block sniper rifle and take aim at the rebels along the top of the cliffs. There will be about 10 enemies with a few running in from the right early on to take the place of killed ones. They'll either be squatted on the cliff edge or hiding behind rocks. Pick them off one by one until they are all dead.

Next, move on to the blockade towards the left. There is another rolling block for ammo if you wish to use that but not recommended. As you approach an explosion will blow a hole in the blockade and kill a few initial enemies. A group of about 10 will run in from the back-right and try to take cover among the various crates and rocks. Throw fire bottles if you have them or use Dead-Eye sweeps to kill them all quickly.

Move up to the valley where there are three enemies hiding in cover and more making their way down the hill in the back. Dead-Eye the ones on the hill and finish off the rest. This wave of enemies is usually easy.

Run up the hill and to the right to get to the ruins. You'll be confronted by three snipers on top of ruins and three other enemies below them. It is in your best interest to take some form of cover (behind ruins or just below the cliff) as the snipers will go after you. Using the Rolling Block, kill all three snipers and the three others will run away. (Note: the sniper on the far right can be killed when you are running up the hill from the valley. He can also shoot you too at this point.) Move forward and kill them on your way to the next set of ruins. Eventually four enemies will run towards you. Kill them as you approach and continue on over their dead bodies.

When you get to the next set of ruins there will be another Rolling Block for ammo. Grab and use it if you wish. A wave of about ten enemies will come over the hill and occupy the ruins in front of you. Clear the area however you wish. I find it easy to run up the hill on the left, shooting the ones coming down and using the hill as a vantage point to kill the rest taking cover in the ruins.

Move up to the next area where there are about six enemies hiding among ruins with one in a small tower in the back-right. Again, clear them out however you wish. You can actually run up onto the cliff along the left and use it as a vantage point.

Make your way to the small tower where there is a Rolling Block for ammo. Ahead of you is the last stretch of enemies. There are about 13 of them crouched behind rocks along the road and five are in the fort. Pick a safe spot and use the sniper to take out as many as you can. The ones in the fort are standing out in the open. One or two may be hard to see until you see the muzzle flashing as they shoot. Use a rifle to clear out the rest along the road and when there is a few left the army will move forward. Go with them and meet de Santa at the fort.

In the final cutscene, while surviving rebels are shot at the cliff edge, de Santa tells Marston he deserves women and wine. John tells de Santa he wants information the next time they speak and the captain says they will talk back at Escalera.

Gold Tips

  • Get on your horse and take the shotgun position on the convoy wagon. You'll need to wait for de Santa.
  • After trip skipping, be ready for the ambush. Dead-Eye and headshot the ambushers (you can actually kill the lower two before the explosion). Do the same for the ones on horseback.
  • As soon as the wagon slows down at the camp, jump off and sprint in to trigger the cutscene.
  • Quickly grab the Rolling Block sniper rifle and headshot the enemies on the cliffs. Start from the left and work your way right and then back left as more run in from the right during the fight and take places all along the cliff edge.
  • Sprint to the left to the blockade. Throw fire bottles if you have them near the back-center where the enemies run in. Use Dead-Eye sweeps to kill the mob quickly. Aim for the head.
  • Sprint to the valley and use Dead-Eye sweeps to headshot the enemies.
  • Sprint up the hill to the ruins and kill the three snipers in the small towers first. The others on the ground will run away.
  • Kill the enemies coming at you while you continue to sprint to the next set of ruins.
  • Use Dead-Eye sweeps or bursts to kill the wave of enemies coming over the small hill. Go left up the hill for a good vantage point.
  • For the next set of ruins, sprint up along the left cliff for a good vantage point and use Dead-Eye to headshot the enemies hiding around the area.
  • Find a good spot to snipe and kill most of the enemies along the last stretch as well as the enemies in the fort itself. Sprint in to clean up the rest and meet de Santa in the fort.
