100% In Red Dead Redemption
For 100% completion in Red Dead Redemption, you must complete pretty much everything the game has to offer. There are 242 essential objectives that contribute to your completion percentage. Different tasks award different amounts of percentage to your total.
Rewards For 100% Completion
After earning 100% completion, the player will be awarded with the following:
- You will unlock the "Bureau Uniform" which grants amnesty from the law. While wearing it, you'll never receive a bounty no matter what you do, although lawmen may still shoot at you if you engage in combat with them.
- The Gold Trophy / 100GS Achievement "REDEEMED" is unlocked.
Not Required For 100%
You aren't obligated to do "everything" in the game for 100% completion. There are several side missions and tasks which are optional.
You do not need to do any of the following for 100% completion:
- Acquire the "Pleasance House" safehouse. This is optional.
- Rent the "Ridgewood Farm" or "Plainview" safehouses. As they're not purchasable properties they don't count towards 100%.
- Complete the multi-part Stranger Side-Mission "I Know You".
- Acquire any weapons other than those listed below.
- Complete the Solomon's Folly gang hideout.
- Acquire any outfits other than those listed below.
- Break any additional horses other than those in missions or required Horsebreaking jobs.
- Purchase any items from shops other than required outfit scraps and weapons
- Complete the Explosive Rifle and Tomahawk challenges.

You must complete 18 of the 19 stranger missions worth 9% in total.
Most of the stranger missions have multiple parts, with up to 6 smaller tasks which can be attempted at any time. All parts be finished in order to fully complete the objective.

You must defeat all competitors (those waiting in line or sat at the table to play) in each of the minigames in order to "win", other than Blackjack which simply requires quitting the game while in profit. All 6 games are worth 3% in total.

You must complete various tasks to unlock each outfit. The percentage is awarded when the outfit is fully completed. All 9 outfits are worth 4.5% in total.

Purchase Rare Weapons
You must purchase each of the 5 unique weapons from gunsmiths worth 2.5% in total. The guns are half of their normal price if you have a high Honor rating and you'll receive a further 50% discount if you're wearing the Savvy Merchant outfit.

You must acquire all 13 safehouses. Rental properties don't count. You'll purchase 8 of them, the other safehouses are unlocked throughout the story. Safehouses are worth 2% in total.

Complete 4 lists, each containing 10 ambient challenges. Each objective must be completed in order. Percentage is awarded after the 5th and 10th task. All 4 challenges are worth 8% in total.

Discover All 94 Locations (Buy Maps)
You can physically visit every location, or just buy maps from the General Stores. For the purpose of simplicity, we'll recommend you just buy the maps which will mark the locations automatically when you use them from your "Consumables" menu. Discovering all locations is worth 6% in total. Each single location is worth precisely 0.063829787234043% (rounded in-game).
You'll discover most of the locations throughout the story and side missions, so you can either cross reference with your in-game map to mark off the locations which are displayed in-game, or just wait until you purchase the maps and check them all off.
