Bull's Eye
Red Harlow helps his parents fight off a bandit attack on their family home.
Nate Harlow returns home and is embraced by his son - Red, and his wife - Falling Star. He explains to them his new riches from a gold mine claim and shows off a new two-of-a-kind revolver he created with his partner.
Red asks to try out the new gun but his father tells him one day it may be his, but for now he can have his old revolver.
You're then told "There's a target practice area for you to try out your pa's pistol. Follow the fenced path down to the creek bed to learn how to shoot".
You must successfully pass at least 3 of these 4 targets.
- Accuracy: 50%
- Damage Taken: 40%
- Time: 5:30
- Best Combo: $150
After the intro cutscene, run straight forward and head down to the creek bed. The game will instruct you on how to control your character by using the left analog stick. You can rotate the camera with the right analog stick. Pausing the game will bring up a list of options which can be used to modify the camera and player options. If you're playing on PS5, you'll press the "Start Button" by pressing the right side of the touch pad. Pressing the left side acts as the "Select Button".
You're then told to "Follow the path down to the creek bed". Continue following it around until you reach an area with a target.
The game will welcome you to the training area and offer a tutorial so you can learn how to shoot. If this is your first time playing the game, it's recommended that you start the tutorial by pressing the Square button, however you'll also have the option to skip it with the Triangle button. On subsequent playthroughs you'll probably just want to skip the tutorial here.
Shooting Tutorial
First, you'll be told to "Pull the left trigger to draw your weapon" which equates to holding the L1 button on PlayStation. Holding this button will display a crosshair on the screen. You can aim your gun by moving the right analog stick and strafe or walk around with the left stick while you're aiming.
You're told to "Aim at the bull's eye" which is the center of the red circular target in front of you. You'll notice the crosshair goes red when you're aiming at an enemy or otherwise important target. The game will tell you "Pull the right trigger to fire your weapon" so press R1 to fire a shot.
Assuming you hit the target, the game will tell you "That's some good shooting" then tell you "Now, lets use this targeting dummy as an enemy". Aiming the gun at the dummy will turn the crosshairs red, however you're given specific instructions on what to shoot.
First you're told to "Shoot the Dummy's Right Hand" which is marked with a glowing golden orb. Fire a shot at the hand, then you're told "Shoot the Dummy's Left Foot" so adjust your aim and shoot its foot. Next you're told to "Shoot the Dummy's Left Hand" which is once again marked with a glowing orb and finally you're asked to "Shoot the Dummy's Right Foot".
Once all 4 body parts are hit, the game tells you "Good, you sure can handle a shooting iron! Let's see how precise you can be with your aiming. Take out those bottles and pans there on the fence".
Head down the path towards the wooden fence and you'll notice more targets to shoot at. You can actually get as close as you want, so don't make things harder for yourself by staying really far back.
Remember the crosshair will turn red when you're going to hit the target, so only fire when you've got your aim spot on.
There are two bottles at the upper left of the fence, three pans hanging below the center and four more smaller tin cans to shoot to the right of the fence.
Once they're all hit, you're told "You got them all! Nice shooting!"
Nate celebrates his shooting skills by firing off more shots into the air as his mother yells at him, asking him not to destroy her pots and pans. Nate calms Falling Star, telling her he'll buy her a new set of pans the next day in town.
Suddenly a number of bandits climb the fences and move in to attack their home. Nate calls on Red to come and help defend their property.
The game tells you "Here come some enemies. Dispose of them and work your way up the path to your house". Head back the way you can and you'll be cut off by the first enemy as you reach the corner. Always try to get a headshot on enemies. It'll do much more damage and you'll often kill weaker enemies with a single shot. It's always good practice to manually reload your guns when you get a moment of peace too. You can do this with the Triangle button. Failing to reload may cause you to take damage in a firefight if you run out of bullets as reloading can be quite slow.
As you aproach the foot of the hill you'll encounter another enemy who will run down towards you, and a third enemy who will wait at the top of the hill by the fence. Take them both out as quickly as you can then continue towards the house.
You'll encounter around 9 further enemies here as you work alongside your father Nate - although it's quite dark and difficult to tell which one is him and the enemies. The main way you can tell is whether the crosshair turns red when you aim at him or not.
Try to keep moving and strafing while you aim to make yourself harder to hit and remember to try for headshots on the enemies. Loop around the house to the right where you'll probably encounter 2 enemies, followed by 4 at the other side of the house, and two more who will appear back near the path you came along.
Once the final enemy is killed, the camera will focus on him as he hits the deck.
Red rushes over to check on his parents who are lying on the ground next to their burning home, but it's too late, they're both dead. Colonel Daren then appears.
Red spots his father's revolver in a fire on the ground nearby. Braving the pain, he grabs it and fires a shot at Colonel Daren, hitting him in the arm and blowing it clean off. Red immediately drops the gun which has severely burnt his hand but is able to make an escape.
A short time later we see Red hiding in the grass, holding onto his aching red hand as the bandits make their escape.
