Undead Challenges
There are 6 challenges found in Undead Nightmare. Four are Undead Challenges required for 100% completion.
You'll need to complete the four main challenges to unlock the Legend of the Apocalypse outfit. The other two are additional weapon challenges which are optional. When you pause the game navigate to the "Journal" section and then "Challenges". Each challenge has multiple ranks to complete with each one more difficult than the previous. Each challenge has its own tasks and reward.

Undead Hunter Challenge
The Undead Hunter challenges are available from the start of the game, but no zombies will spawn until you visit Blackwater.
You can press Triangle on some of the challenges to view a more detailed breakdown.
Undead Hunter - Rank 1
Kill 100 Fresh (normal) Undead and 25 Bolters
Fresh Zombies
You'll find fresh zombies almost everywhere. They move slowly and go down easily so they're not going to be much of a problem.
Bolters
Bolters aren't generally found in West Elizabeth so you'll need to head into New Austin to hunt them down. They're the skinny zombies who move quickly and run around on all-fours. Jorge's Gap, to the West of Armadillo is a good place to look for them as dozens of different zombies spawn in the tiny crevice.
If all else fails, all four types of zombie will spawn outside the walls of El Presidio in Nuevo Paraiso, so check there once you gain access to Mexico.
Undead Hunter - Rank 2
Kill 25 more Bruisers and 15 more Retchers
Bruiser
Bruiser zombies are much chunkier than the others and will often charge at you, knocking you to the ground. They can be found mostly in New Austin and Nuevo Paraiso.
Retcher
Retchers are the glowing green zombies who spit or throw poisonous goo at you. They mostly appear around Gaptooth Ridge and throughout Nuevo Paraiso. Occasionally a few may appear on the paths near Fort Mercer. You'll encounter a lot of them during the train ride section of "American Imperialism" so this is a good place to complete this and the next rank of the challenge.
If all else fails, all four types of zombie will spawn outside the walls of El Presidio in Nuevo Paraiso, so check there once you gain access to Mexico.
Undead Hunter - Rank 3
Use a Retcher explosion to kill 2 other undead
The easiest place to do this is on the train ride portion of "American Imperialism" as mentioned above, however there are numerous places where you'll find lots of zombies, particularly in Mexico. You could use Undead Bait to lure them together before shooting the Retcher in the head. It will then explode and kill nearby zombies.
If all else fails, all four types of zombie will spawn outside the walls of El Presidio in Nuevo Paraiso, so check there once you gain access to Mexico.
Undead Hunter - Rank 4
Kill 2 undead bears, 5 undead wolves, and 3 undead cougars with a torch
The easiest way to complete this is to ride an Apocalypse Horse (one of the Four Horses of the Apocalypse from the challenges below) in the Tall Trees area. Allow the undead animal to walk up to the left side of your horse and hit it with the torch multiple times. The Apocalypse Horse won't die easily and you won't take any damage. You may need to hit and set fire to the animal 3 or 4 times before they die so be patient.
Wolves can be found almost anywhere.
Cougars are common in Rio Bravo, along the main road to the West of Plainview.
Bears are only found in Tall Trees.
Undead Hunter - Rank 5
Kill the Chupacabra
It's very strongly advised that you do not ride an Apocalypse mount - especially Death - or else the Chupacabra may not appear. Dismount and run around on foot until it appears if you wish.
The Chupacabra can usually be found towards the South of Mexico but it spawns at random so it could take a lot of riding or running around aimlessly until it appears. Be patient!
The Chupacabra may spawn in one of the locations listed on the map below. This information comes directly from Rockstar Games, who in a support article on their website suggest:
Chupacabra Spawns (via Rockstar Games)
"The greatest chance of finding the Chupacabra is in Nuevo Paraiso when you are on the last tier of the hunting challenges. When you are near the random Chupacabra spawn, a message will appear and you will be able to see the radius of its possible location on the map.
The Chupacabra can be found in the fields North West of Torquemada. When zoomed out on the game map, the area will have a picture of three horses.
The creature can also be found South East of Perdido, South of Casa Madrugada, or North of Chuparosa near the river."
- Ammo
- Weapon Unlocked: LeMat Revolver
- Weapon Unlocked: Evans Repeater
- The Unicorn will begin to spawn North of Torquemada where the three horses appear on the map.
Undead Sharpshooter Challenge
The Undead Sharpshooter challenges are unlocked from the start of the game and will probably be the first ones you undertake when you reach Blackwater. You probably won't be able to complete the challenges until you gain access to Mexico.
Undead Sharpshooter - Rank 1
Kill 5 undead in 10 seconds using a gun
This one is pretty simple and you should be able to manage it the first time you get to Blackwater. Head towards the docks and there should be more than enough fresh zombies walking around. Aim for headshots to save ammo and speed up the process.
Undead Sharpshooter - Rank 3
Kill 5 flaming undead in one Dead-Eye meter
The easy way to do this is to use Phosphorous Coating on your bullets. You'll need to play through a few story missions, including the first part of Nigel West Dickens' first mission "A Cure for All That Ails You" until he hands over the phosphorous coating. Head to an area with at least 5 zombies, make sure your Dead Eye meter is full and apply the coating to your bullets then enter Dead Eye and paint targets for 5 headshots. Because the bullets are flaming, the zombies count as being on fire when they die.
A more challenging way to do this is to throw a Fire Bottle at a group of zombies, then target the burning zombies with Dead Eye and headshot at least 5 of them.
Another method involves using explosives to kill the zombies. Throw some Undead Bait to gather a group of 5 zombies together (if necessary), then throw a Fire Bottle at them to set them on fire. Switch weapons to Dynamite or Explosive Rifle and enter Dead Eye, then paint a target on the zombies to throw the Dynamite, or shoot the Explosive Rifle. Because the zombies were burning and you used Dead Eye, it will count.
Undead Sharpshooter - Rank 4
Kill one of each undead type in one Dead-Eye meter
The best place to do this is outside the walls of El Presidio in Mexico. All four types of zombies spawn there, so you should be able to gather them with Undead Bait and then target headshots with Dead Eye.
Undead Sharpshooter - Rank 5
Kill 5 undead in 8 seconds with a sniper (and no Dead-Eye)
Again, the best place to do this is outside the walls of El Presidio in Mexico. You'll need a sniper rifle before you're able to do this though, so you'll probably need to save the Pacific Union RR Camp to unlock one.
You don't actually have to look down the scope and shoot the zombies, the kills will still count if you execute zombies from close range (by pressing R2 without aiming) while carrying a sniper rifle, or even whack them with the rifle. You can't use Dead Eye, but as long as you're a fair distance back, it should be easy enough to snipe 5 zombies in the head outside the gates of El Presidio in under 8 seconds.
The timer starts from your first kill, so ultimately you have 8 seconds to get 4 more sniper kills which isn't too tough.
Undead Treasure Hunter
Although the treasure hunter challenge is unlocked from the start of the game, you'll need to acquire a treasure map before you can start collecting the rewards. You'll only get the treasure map from a random encounter, so pay attention to the blue circles which appear on your radar as you're riding around the map.
The treasures must be collected in order, however you can see the locations of all 5 treasures on our map below.
Undead Treasure Hunter - Rank 1
Find the first map in a chest at a wilderness camp and find the treasure.
You can acqire the map in a few different ways via some random events:
- A doctor using a Gatling Gun against a horde who requests that you get him a zombie (hogtied) and gives the map as a reward. Opening the chest early will make him hostile but you'll still acquire the treasure map.
- A person sitting at a campsite with a chest (person becomes hostile after opening chest).
- A chest inside a zombie-packed house or barn at Warthington Ranch (Hennigan's Stead), Silent Stead (Gaptooth Ridge), or Tanner's Reach (Tall Trees). A man warns not to go inside but dynamite through a window is easy enough to clear it out.
Once you get started, go to "Kit" in your satchel and view the treasure map.
You are looking for the area depicted in the drawing. Go there and look for a little pile of rocks. A reward and the next map will be found under the rocks.
The first treasure is found at the end of a canyon off the map, North of Pike's Basin. Head North from MacFarlane's Ranch and then West. You'll be North of and above the train tunnel.
Undead Treasure Hunter - Rank 5
Find the treasure
This one can be a bit of a pain to get to. It is on a small cliff sticking out towards the open South-West of Casa Madrugada. Use a horse and make your way up the nearest possible hill to the West. Then go over to the treasure location without falling off.
Four Horses of the Apocalypse Challenge
The four horses will spawn around the map at random. There's nothing you can do to force them to appear, you'll just need to ride around in each area and pay attention when you're told there's a mythical creature nearby.
Four Horses of the Apocalypse - Rank 2
Find one of the four horses of the apocalypse
War is found in New Austin. I encountered it to the North of Hennigan's Stead while heading for the first treasure, but on an additional playthrough also encountered it near the Warthington Ranch just outside MacFarlane's Ranch.
Four Horses of the Apocalypse - Rank 4
Find one of the four horses of the apocalypse
Death spawns randomly anywhere on the map after finding the other three horses. It is also given after completing the main story of Undead Nightmare. I encountered it just to the West of Plainview but it can spawn anywhere.
Four Horses of the Apocalypse - Rank 5
Kill one of each undead type using the fourth horse of the apocalypse also known as "Death" (trample the undeads).
Travel to El Presidio where all 4 types of zombies will spawn outside the walls. They don't need to be done within a specific time limit or anything, so as long as you run over any zombies you see while riding around on Death, eventually you'll complete this.
Tomahawk Mastery Challenge
The Tomahawk challenge is unlocked from the start of the game, however you'll need to acquire the weapon before you can work your way through the ranks.
I personally think the Tomahawk is one of the best weapons in the game, particularly because the melee weapon kills enemies in a single hit and doesn't use any ammo. Just run around to avoid the zombies then mash R2 to execute them with a chop to the neck as they get close to you.
Tomahawk Mastery - Rank 1
Acquire a tomahawk by saving the town of Manzanita Post.
Manzanita Post is one of the first towns you'll encounter which needs saving after leaving Blackwater. I recommend you save it asap as the Tomahawk is a great weapon to have. Kill all of the zombies and once the town is clear you'll receive the Tomahawk as a reward.
Tomahawk Mastery - Rank 2
Kill one enemy with the tomahawk used as a throwing weapon, one as a melee weapon, and one from horseback.
This is pretty straight forward. The melee weapon kill should be an execution. Press R2 without aiming while next to a zombie. You'll then need to hold L2 to aim and press R2 to throw a tomahawk for the other two objectives. One while on foot and one while riding a horse. Try to aim for headshots to guarantee a kill.
Tomahawk Mastery - Rank 3
Kill a flying bat with a tomahawk.
This one is arguably the toughest tomahawk challenge because Dead Eye doesn't really help. Fire off a gunshot to scare bats out of trees and bushes, then switch to the Tomahawk and try to aim a few feet in front of the bat so it flies into the tomahawk. You may waste a few while attempting this but eventually you'll get lucky and find a low flying bat which will be easier to hit.
Tomahawk Mastery - Rank 4
Kill 5 enemies in a row without missing with the tomahawk.
This is pretty simple if you have lock-on aiming. Just be careful with your throws and only fire when you can see the area in front of you is clear. Don't risk it too near a building or other objects like trees. An easy way to do this is just to use the melee / execution method as they will be guaranteed hits. If you throw a tomahawk that doesn't get a kill, you'll need to start over.
Tomahawk Mastery - Rank 5
Save a town using only tomahawks.
You can try to save an easy town like Cochinay, Blackwater or Nosalida, etc. Use melee as much as possible and loot tomahawks back from killed zombies. Run around and let the zombies come towards you, then mash R2 to perform some executions with the tomahawk and run around again. Eventually you'll wipe them all out.
You can also kill just one zombie with a tomahawk and then kill all the others using Death or another Apocalypse horse and it will still count.
Explosive Rifle Mastery Challenge
The Explosive Rifle challenge is unlocked from the start of the game, however you'll need to acquire the weapon before you can work your way through the ranks.
Explosive Rifle Mastery - Rank 2
Kill one of each of the 4 undead types with the Explosive Rifle.
In New Austin, your best bet to find all 4 types of zombie is at Gaptooth Ridge, with Retcher's (the green ones) being the rarest. For an easier time of it, head to El Presidio in Mexico as all four types of undead spawn outside the walls of the fort.
Explosive Rifle Mastery - Rank 3
Kill 3 zombies in 1 shot with the Explosive Rifle.
There should be numerous places where this can be done including El Presidio in Mexico or Jorge's Gap near Armadillo. You'll also have a good chance to do it while saving any town if you can climb onto something and let the zombies gather below you. Using Undead Bait is also a good way to group them together.
Explosive Rifle Mastery - Rank 5
Obtain and change into the US Army Uniform. Kill a zombie with the Explosive Rifle while wearing the US Army Uniform.
You'll collect the US Army Uniform during "American Imperialism" for Nigel West Dickens. Once you're wearing it, simply kill any zombie with the Explosive Rifle. If you're wearing a different outfit, head back to your safehouse and change into the US Army Uniform first.
If you are using the Undead Nightmare disc and do not see the above weapon challenges: exit Undead Nightmare, uninstall game data (not save data) for the main Red Dead Redemption game, and then reload Undead Nightmare. The challenges should appear when you get back into the game.
