Fresh blood in Mexico, Marston seeks help finding Escuella and Williamson from Captain de Santa but John will need to help the Mexican army before they will help him.

Rewards: +$50, +300 Fame

Serious face

John Marston approaches the large manor in Escalera. He is confronted at the gate by a few soldiers including a captain. After a tense conversation about dishonoring the captain with guns being raised, the captain reveals he is joking with Marston and invites him in. Captain Vincente de Santa introduces himself and the two discuss the rebellious state of affairs in Mexico. Marston asks if they know of Bill Williamson and Javier Escuella. The captain does not directly know but thinks they could be hiding with rebels who are lead by Abraham Reyes. The captain goes on to say they are trying to catch Reyes in a trap and would like Marston to help them in order for the captain's boss, Coronel Allende, to favor helping John in return.

All aboard the bait train

In control of John, you are given the option of taking your horse to Chuparosa or riding shotgun with de Santa. It's a long ride so take shotgun and trip skip. The ride includes more dialogue about Marston's past and relation to Escuella as well as why Mexico is in trouble. Once at Chuparosa, mount a horse and ride over to the train engine which will begin to move out.

You are instructed to escort the train which means riding along side it, however, you can actually get onto the train and ride it instead (de Santa will tell you to get off but nothing happens). This option allows for a better view of the landscape and is much better to fight off enemies on both sides of the train. I like to sit on top of the first car behind the engine, right at the front edge of the roof. If you choose to keep your horse, ride well ahead of the train so enemies appear and can be killed before they are able to damage the train engine.

Not too long after leaving Chuparosa, the first set of enemies will appear. At the first road crossing there are three on foot on the left behind a wagon with two on horseback coming in from the right. Kill them. At the next crossing there are two more behind a wagon with 3 on horseback, all on the left. Kill the ones on foot first because they have dynamite. A little farther along the track there are two enemies crouching behind a rock so kill them as well. As you approach the Las Hermanas convent with a small train station, 3 enemies on horseback ride in from the right down the hill and two more appear ahead on the left. Kill each and every one of them.

You should have a small break now before reaching the tunnel. Directly on the other side there is an enemy on the left with dynamite and two on the right plus 3 on horseback riding in. Take them all out. A little farther and two more enemies on horseback ride in from the right. Kill them too. Finally, three more on horseback will come at you from the right so kill them too. If the train engine takes too much damage a cutscene will show it explode.

When all the enemies are dead, head for the village ahead. If you chose to sit on the train, you can ride it to town or get off and whistle for your horse to ride with de Santa. Either way you'll need to meet de Santa in the middle of the village square of Casa Madrugada. A cutscene will show de Santa welcoming Marston into the bar but rebels outside retake the train. Of course Marston is tasked with stopping the train before it reaches the bridge to the United States.

This train is my train

Back in control, mount your horse and head out. The train will be leaving with five enemies spread out on board. Either ride along side to take them out or hop on to kill them one by one while working your way up to the engine. The first way is easier and a horse can get to the engine much faster than walking and climbing across the train cars. When you get to the engine, jump on to trigger a cutscene. You should be able to do this before the train begins up the hill.

The final cutscene shows the rail bridge exploding due to dynamite strapped to it and John applying the brakes just in time. He'll look over the edge at the water below.

Gold Tips

  • Ride shotgun with de Santa and trip skip.
  • Get on the horse provided and sprint to the engine or car behind it.
  • Either get on the train and get to the roof for a good vantage point or ride ahead to trigger enemies early so they will not damage the engine.
  • Use Dead-Eye to headshot enemies all along the trip.
  • Recharge Dead-Eye by not using it when not necessary. Headshots will increase it faster. The enemies on horseback usually come close to you for easy shots.
  • As soon as the last wave of enemies is dead, sprint into town. If you are on the train you'll need to get off in order to whistle for your horse.
  • Get on your horse and sprint to the train. Take out the enemies as you ride to the front and hop on as quickly as possible. Use the road on the right to go faster.
