Water and Honesty

A man wishes to obtain land with a supposed water spring under it and needs help persuading the owner.

This mission has 3 parts.

Part 1

REQUIREMENTS:

LOCATION:

WALKTHROUGH:

You'll encounter a man named Andrew McAllister at a campsite on the western edge of Hennigan's Stead.

Approach him as he's sat on a log in front of a tent and press Circle to "Talk to the man".

John asks the man if he can rest at his camp a spell and Andrew says it would be his pleasure.

John then spots a weird stick resting against the log and asks "Say, what's that stick you got there?".

McAllister explains "Oh, y'all ain't never seen a dowsing rod before, mister? Never seen a man... summon the water up from the bare earth. Mister...?".

"Marston. No. I can't say I have" responds John.

John asks "If it's water you're looking for, what's wrong with that lake over there?" as the pair look over towards Lake Don Julio.

McAllister explains they lack the fancy irrigation equipment from the East, so a man needs a wellspring at his property to ranch here. It just so happens he was at Pleasance House last week and he thinks he found water running underneath the property, but the old coot who owns the place threatened to call the law down on him.

John asks if he should tell the man, but McAllister suggests he gets the man to sell his property to them for a small pittance, then he can find the source of the water and build a proper wellspring.

You're then told to "Visit Pleasance House, northwest of Armadillo".

Part 2

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must have completed "Water and Honesty" Part 1

LOCATION:

WALKTHROUGH:

Head over to Pleasance House which is northwest of Armadillo.

When you arrive, approach the owner who is standing at the front of the property sweeping the porch.

As John begins to talk to him, the owner - Clyde Evans - quickly trades his broom for a double-barreled shotgun to ward off who he thinks is a robber.

"Friendly old bastard, ain't you?" asks John.

"I don't need me no friends, friend" responds Clyde.

"We all need friends, old timer. We die alone, but we live among men".

This calms Clyde and he puts down the weapon.

John then explains he's looking to move out this way with his family and wonders if Clyde would be willing to sell him a parcel of land. Despite being told the land is too dry for farming, John explains he likes the scenery and Clyde says he's willing to accept $200 for the deed so he can find himself a place up in Blackwater.

You now have the option to "Give Clyde $200" by pressing Circle, which will purchase the deed, or you can take it by force and hogtie or kill him. If you don't have enough money he will tell you to come back.

Paying Clyde goes easy with Clyde saying good luck while handing over the deed.

Using force will result in losing 100 Honor (unless you're wearing the Bandana) and Clyde's body will need to be looted to obtain the deed.

With the deed in hand, you're told to "Return to McAllister's camp with the good news".

At this point, Pleasance House is now one of your safehouses and you can save the game there at your convenience.

Part 3

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must have completed "Water and Honesty" Part 2
  • Must be carrying the deed to Pleasance House in your satchel.

LOCATION:

WALKTHROUGH:

Head back to the first location to meet McAllister at his camp.

Depending on how you acquired the deed, the cutscene will play out differently.

McAllister is looking through binoculars when John arrives.

McAllister takes the deed and looks it over, mumbling to himself as he reads through it.

If you paid Clyde for it, McAllister will give you $220, thanking you for putting your own money up for it. He likes when transactions go smoothly.

If you stole it from Clyde, McAllister comments how the deed is bloody and that the man has a son in Blackwater so this sale should stay quiet. He'll only give you $15.

Either way, John will wish him luck with the property and walk away with a small profit.

At this point, you no longer have the deed to Pleasance House, meaning it's no longer a usable safehouse... You can however kill McAllister and loot the deed from his body, permanently unlocking it back up as a safehouse.

For more details, see our Safehouses guide.
