I Know You
Of all the strangers, this guy is the strangest. His head is definitely in the clouds.
This mission has 5 parts.
This stranger mission is only available before "The Last Enemy That Shall Be Destroyed".
It is optional and does not need to be completed towards 100% completion.
Part 1
REQUIREMENTS:
- Must have completed the mission “A Tempest Looms” to unlock.
LOCATION:
WALKTHROUGH:
You'll encounter a man in a suit and top hat South-West of MacFarlane's Ranch, looking out across the canyon towards Nuevo Paraiso.
Approach him and press Circle to "Talk to the man".
"Hello, John. John Marston" says the strange man.
"Do I know you?" asks Marston.
"I hope so. I seem to know you" replies the man.
"I'm pretty good at remembering faces" explains John.
"Are you? Do you remember Heidi McCourt's face?" asks the man, before explaining to John, who can't seem to remember, "She was a girl Dutch van der Linde shot in the head on that raid on the ferry a few years back. Same one you got shot on. Pretty girl, until her eye was hanging out by a thread of tendon and her brain was plastered over a wall".
"Not really" replies Marston.
"Then why would you remember me, friend? You've forgotten far more important people than me".
The Strange Man then explains he has a drunken friend in Thieves' Landing who may be unfaithful to his wife. He wants John to go over and advise the man on how best to proceed.
You're then told to "Visit the Strange Man's friend in Thieves' Landing".
Part 2
REQUIREMENTS:
- Must have completed "I Know You" Part 1.
LOCATION:
WALKTHROUGH:
Make your way to Thieves' Landing. When you arrive in the area, you'll see a message from the game which explains "This gentleman must be the mysterious stranger's friend. Perhaps you should give him some advice".
Make your way to the Saloon in the center of town and you'll spot the man in front of the building, talking to a woman against the wall.
Approach him and you'll be given two choices:
- Press Triangle to "Encourage the man. (Give $15)"
- Result: -$15, -20 Honor
- Press Circle to "Discourage the man".
- Result: +15 Honor
With your decision made, watch the resulting cutscene.
If you chose to discourage the man, Marston will explain to the man that his wife loves him and he's making a mistake.
He realizes what he's doing is wrong and gets rid of the girl who walks away annoyed at her lack of business.
John then leaves the man to think about the consequences of his actions.
I Know You complete.
Part 3
REQUIREMENTS:
- Must have completed "I Know You" Part 2.
- Must have completed the mission “We Shall Be Together in Paradise”.
LOCATION:
WALKTHROUGH:
Speak with The Strange Man at his campsite on a rock formation south of El Matadero. He greets John - who still does not remember who he is. The Strange Man continues to talk about John's past and morality. He goes on to say that there is an old nun taking money she raised to the bank. He wants John to go over and see if he can keep robbers away... or rob her himself.
Ride to Las Hermanas and find the nun to the left of the entrance. When you approach the nun you are given a choice to make. Either donate money or rob her at gunpoint:
- Donate: -$10, +35 Honor (Note: Only given honor if you persuaded the drunk in Part 1)
- Rob: ~$315, +50 Fame, -120 Honor
With your decision made, watch the result and Part 2 is complete.
Part 4
REQUIREMENTS:
- Must have completed "I Know You" Part 3.
LOCATION:
WALKTHROUGH:
Ride to Las Hermanas and find the nun to the left of the entrance. When you approach the nun you are given a choice to make. Either donate money or rob her at gunpoint:
- Donate: -$10, +35 Honor (Note: Only given honor if you persuaded the drunk in Part 1)
- Rob: ~$315, +50 Fame, -120 Honor
With your decision made, watch the result.
Part 5
REQUIREMENTS:
- Must have completed "I Know You" Part 4.
- Must have completed the mission "An Appointed Time".
LOCATION:
WALKTHROUGH:
Speak with The Strange Man on the cliff overlooking Beecher's Hope. He remarks how this spot is beautiful. John tries to get the man's name but he toys with John and makes him angry. The Strange Man again says this spot is fine and walks away. John draws his gun and fires a few shots at him. The Strange Man does not take any hits - as if they went right through him.
Tips
- Note: As stated at the top of this guide, this stranger mission is only available before "The Last Enemy That Shall Be Destroyed". You will notice a reference in that mission.
- For Part 1-2 ride to Thieves' Landing and make a decision.
- For Part 3-4 ride to Las Hermanas and make a decision. If you choose to rob the nun you will gain a wanted level shortly after. Killing the nun will fail the quest and then you'll need to retry later.
- For Part 5 simply talk with The Strange Man.
