Love is the Opiate
Set an enslaved immigrant free so he can rejoin his girlfriend - if only he can break other chains.
This mission has 3 parts.
Part 1
REQUIREMENTS:
- Must have completed the mission “Empty Promises”.
- Must have completed the stranger side-mission “Poppycock”.
LOCATION:
WALKTHROUGH:
Speak to a man (Zhou) inside the slaughterhouse at El Matadero.
He's a soft spoken Chinese man who is a bit sad. He came to America to make a fortune and marry his beloved girlfriend back in Shanghai.
Unfortunately, he is an indentured servant (almost a slave) and will never get back home.
The foreman, Juan de la Vara, appears and says Zhou signed a contract.
After some negotiations he decides to trade Zhou's freedom for a white stallion.
You're then instructed to "Find a white stallion to earn Zhou's freedom".
Head out and find a white stallion (Hungarian Half-bred). You might not need to go too far as one or two may spawn in the open areas around El Matadero. Head South-West and check around for wild horses. Scan the field and then try North if needed. Make sure the horse is white and not grey. When you find one, lasso and break it by keeping centered on the horse.
I personally found one on top of the cliffs West of El Presidio.
If you've already broken a Hungarian Half-bred, you can also purchase the deed from a general store and use that to spawn one for Juan. If you go down this route, you may need to save and reload your game before it lets you hand over the horse.
Part 2
REQUIREMENTS:
- Must have completed "Love is the Opiate" Part 1.
- Must have acquired and bring with you a white stallion (Hungarian Half-bred).
LOCATION:
WALKTHROUGH:
With a white stallion at your command, head back to the slaughterhouse.
The foreman is happy and lets Zhou go.
Of course Zhou is also happy and thanks you before walking off to go back to his beloved.
Part 3
REQUIREMENTS:
- Must have completed "Love is the Opiate" Part 2.
- Roughly 2 days must have passed in-game since completing the previous part. Saving and reloading the game can cause the next mission to immediately become available.
LOCATION:
WALKTHROUGH:
Two weeks later in Chuparosa, speak to a seemingly-sleepy Zhou on the train station platform.
He says he missed the train but he's definitely leaving tomorrow.
His beloved is waiting for him and he's definitely going to quit - what he will quit is a good question but possibly related to the previous stranger mission.
After a little more rambling he dozes off again.
This stranger mission is now complete.
Tips
- White Hungarian Half-breds can be found in the open areas near the slaughterhouse. You might get lucky with one running by right outside the village. If you have trouble finding one go northeast towards Torquemada to find a herd. Break one and return it to the foreman.
- If you are riding a white stallion as a mount simply ride out of the village a little bit and then return when the purple icon appears. You'll give up your mount to the foreman but right after the mission part ends you can whistle to have another one appear as your new mount.
- Capturing a white stallion before starting the mission or using a horse deed will yield a similar outcome.
- If you do not want to wait two weeks for the second part, you can kill yourself and Zhou will appear at the train station after respawn.
