Kit Items
There are a number of items you can acquire or purchase in Red Dead Redemption, including some unique mission-exclusive items. Find out all about them and their benefits.
Kit items are typically one-off purchases or special items you'll be given in game which provide permanent boosts and benefits to the player, or are required during specific missions. They are stored in the "Kit" section of the Satchel inventory.

Basic Campsite
Gives you a place to rest. Refills revolver and repeater ammunition if you have none.
How To Acquire: Automatically owned from the start of the game.
Using this item while in the wilderness will allow you to set up a camp. From there you can change outfits, fast travel and save your game. Attempting to use it in an unsuitable area will display a message explaining you can't use it near a gang hideout, town or non-flat terrain.
Basilio's Map
A map from Basilio to his family's treasure.
How To Acquire: Automatically obtained at the start of the "Aztec Gold" Stranger side-mission. This item is removed once the mission is completed.
Using this item will display 1 of 4 different maps based on your progress through the side-mission.
Binoculars
Allows you to view faraway objects.
How To Acquire: You'll pick these up towards the end of the story mission "At Home With Dutch" and they will remain in your inventory from then on.
Using this item will allow you to look through the binoculars, providing a zoomed-in view of your surroundings.
Blackmail Photographs
Embarassing photographs of the governor's political opponent.
How To Acquire: You're given these automatically at the start of the "American Lobbyist" Stranger side-mission. You'll keep them permanently from then.
Using this item will allow you to view the incriminating photographs.
Bounty Proof
Proves you killed a bounty target.
How To Acquire: Start a Bounty Hunting side-mission, then instead of capturing the Bounty target alive, kill him and loot his body. From that point until you deliver it to the foreman, this item will appear in your inventory.
Improved Campsite
Gives you a place to rest. Refills ammunition for all types of guns if you have none.
How To Acquire: Purchase it from a General Store.

Land Deed
A deed to a tract of land in Tall Trees, won in a game of Liar's Dice.
How To Acquire: During the Stranger side-mission "Lights, Camera, Action" eventually you'll head to Thieves' Landing to play Liar's Dice. When you win the game you're given this deed. It'll remain in your inventory until you return to MacKenna.
Letter From Sam
A letter written by Sam telling his family about his trip to California.
How To Acquire: Towards the end of the "California" Stranger side-mission you'll acquire this letter from Sam's body. It will remain in your inventory until you deliver it to Armadillo.
Using this item will allow you to read the letter.
Newspaper
Read to learn about current events.
How To Acquire: Purchase one of 9 newspapers from a newspaper seller. New editions are unlocked after specific missions during the story.
Using this item will allow you to view any newspapers you've purchased.
Nosalida Package
A crate of goods recovered from the docks at Nosalida.
How To Acquire: Open the chest at the docks in Nosalida during the "Poppycock" Stranger side-mission. It will remain in your inventory until you deliver it to El Matadero.
Obscuridad del Santo Andres
A blessed symbol from a far-off land. Enemies have less chance to hit you.
How To Acquire: Get your Honor Ranking up to the maximum rank of "Hero". Some time after, you will be randomly approached by a nun while in a town. Press Circle to accept her gift and you will obtain this item which reduces enemy accuracy.
Once you've acquired the item, it won't be removed, even if your honor ranking drops down. You can't interact with it and you don't need to equip this item, its passive effect is permanent from the second you acquire it.
Pardon Letter
Removes any accumulated bounty when turned in at the local train station.
How To Acquire: You'll be given one of these by Seth during the story mission "Exhuming and Other Fine Hobbies". Otherwise they can be randomly acquired when you loot dead bodies. If you use them all, they will be removed from your inventory until you next acquire one.
Pleasance Deed
A land deed obtained from the old owner of Pleasancd House. McAllister is interested in it.
How To Acquire: You'll acquire this during the "Water and Honesty" Stranger side-mission, either by purchasing it or killing the house owner and looting his body. In order to complete the mission you'll need to deliver it to McAllister where it will be removed from your inventory, however if you kill him and loot his body, you can re-acquire the deed which also permanently unlocks Pleasance House as a safehouse.
Treasure Map
Legendary treasure hunter's map collection.
How To Acquire: Complete an Ambient side-mission to gain the map. New maps are unlocked as you complete the ambient treasure hunter challenges.
Wanted Poster
Shows the location and details of the current bounty target.
How To Acquire: Begin a Bounty Hunting side-mission. This will be stored in your inventory until the bounty is delivered, dead or alive.
Using this item allows you to view the wanted poster you used to start the bounty hunt mission.
